Today Law UKRI PHD Scholarship in 2023 Due to the UK’s non-association with the Horizon Europe programme, the five-year research project TRUE, which was previously chosen for funding by the European Research Council (Starting Grant no. 101040463), will now be supported by a UKRI Frontier Research guarantee grant. TRUE will create the first systematic account of trust in user-generated evidence (like photos and videos recorded by witnesses on their mobile phones), in the specific context of its use in human rights accountability processes, by combining legal analysis of trials, large online experiments, and mock jury trials.
We are looking for a PhD candidate to work with us on one of the main components of this research, which will examine how domestic and international courts have used user-generated evidence to prosecute atrocity crimes and seek justice for human rights abuses. The chosen applicant will have a lot of freedom to design their own research agenda within the framework of the larger project and its research goals, which are to:
Identify the factors that influence the perceived credibility, reliability, and probative value of user-generated evidence, and create and validate a scale of trustworthiness for that evidence, comparing it to other types of evidence from Candidates should submit a 500-word research proposal that includes a sample research topic (within the parameters of the TRUE project) and the approaches they plan to take to address it.Examine how defaces are perceived by the general public and how this affects how trustworthy people think user-generated evidence is;

The successful candidate may wish to: focus on a particular jurisdiction or set of jurisdictions in examining the incorporation of user-generated evidence; avail of argumentation mapping techniques to examine the extent to which ‘plausible deniability’ arguments or allegations of deepfakes appeared in relevant cases, and/or to interview judges, lawyers, investigators, or other actors within the parameters of their project.Today Law UKRI PHD Scholarship in 2023
